The Japanese Boss from Hell >>
In this article, I will write about the last few encounters I had with my first Japanese manager.
About My Old Boss.... Yet Again.
She would talk badly about my coworkers. She said my coworker was stupid, and she wasn't a strong person. She also complained to me about her teaching. When I got a new co-worker, she also complained to me about the teacher and how she taught the class.
Therefore, it came as no surprise to me when I heard she was also talking and complaining about me to my coworkers. One of her complaints was that I was always sick, and that she had to cancel classes because of me. That was true, I was always getting sick. Sometimes it was actually legitimate. It was my FIRST time in a new country, and I was constantly around children. Not to mention we didn't have much holidays outside of the big Japanese holidays. But honestly, I just literally HATED going to work.
It was the job itself, but the manager didn't make it any easier.
Do We Have Boundaries?
When I was sick, she would leave things on my door, which sounds cute right? At first, I thought it was cute, but after a while it became creepy to me. She didn't ONLY do it for me, but sometimes she did it for my new co-workers... She never did it for the coworker I had when I arrived, the one she said was stupid. She didn't even want me to meet her my first day at my apartment. Let's call this co-worker Jane. But we'll talk about Jane some other time. But yes, after a while I thought it felt like an invasion of privacy. When I was sick, she would send my Japanese co-workers over to check my temperature. I was 25 years old. It may sound like it's caring, but it felt more like a power move. She wanted to check if I was home because I told her that I was sick. Something about it just seemed off.Our "Heart-to-Heart"
During my six-month evaluation, she really tried to appeal to me. She gave me decent remarks, I know that it was in hopes that I would stay at the school longer… I did not. She told me that she felt I was stronger than my coworker, Jane. She said she knew that I was smart and caring…yada yada. Keep in mind that she constantly gossiped about me to my other co-workers, and don't forget the time she threw me under the bus. So yeah, I wasn't having any bull she said after a while. My Last Week Seeing Her
When I told her I was quitting; she was extremely surprised. And that's when she really got nasty. During my last week, we didn't even really speak. Honestly, before that, we would go weeks without speaking because she was mad at me about something...I didn't care. I was pretty happy whenever this occurred. She only spoke to me because she wanted to ask me to do something... Go figure. But there were times that she would send my Japanese co-worker to tell me to do something LOL. My last week, I told the headquarters that my apartment was disgusting, as was the microwave. To get back at me, she sent my co-worker over to my house after work, which was around 8... He left at 11 because we were trying to clean the microwave. He told me to let it go because she was actually crazy. He also told me that the Japanese staff did all of her work and that she did illegal things, but that's heresy so I don't have any hard proof, but of course, in my heart, I know the truth. My Japanese Co-workers Had It MUCH Worse
We had a blowout because I wanted to move out as quickly as possible, but she needed to check my apartment and get the keys. She told me that the world didn't revolve around me, and we basically yelled at each other. She didn't want anything to do with me at that point, and the feeling was mutual. She came to get my keys on the last day I ever saw her, however my co-worker did the apartment check. That was all. I pray to God that I never have to see her again. She wasn't a nice person at all. My nicest co-worker, who was Japanese, got so fed up with her. The manager was ALWAYS insulting her and bullying her. She left not long after me. But that day, she yelled at her and threatened to walk out. Did the manager treat her better afterwards, and make the decision to treat get like a human being? NOPE. She was still a HUGE b*tch to her, even after everything that happened. I guess some people just can't change. Plus, my new co-worker, Lisa said something that I took to heart. I was conflicted on how to feel about my manager. But she told me "If she doesn't treat the Japanese staff the way she treats the foreign staff, then she's not a good person". She would make the Japanese staff go through our trash, she made them do her work, she made them stay late, and come in on their day off, all while insulting them. I could NEVER trust someone like that, and that's why I hope to never see her again. If I do, I'll have to tell her exactly how I feel about her.
